‘We have to be prepared’ for tariffs, Alberta premier says after Trump meeting

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith recently met with U.S. president-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago residence, where they discussed the looming threat of tariffs on Canadian goods. Smith, who was accompanied by Canadian celebrity investor Kevin O’Leary, described the conversation as friendly and constructive. She also had the opportunity to speak with members of the incoming U.S. administration during her visit.

Trump has previously stated that he would impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico if they do not address issues related to illegal immigration and drug smuggling. When asked about any assurances regarding the tariffs, Smith warned Canadians to be prepared for them to take effect on Jan. 20.

The president-elect’s main concern, according to Smith, is the perceived trade deficit between the United States and Canada, a notion she disputes. She mentioned that there are reportedly 100 executive orders in the works, and she has not seen any indications of a change in Trump’s tariff approach.

Smith emphasized the importance of advocating for carve-outs to protect Canadian interests in the face of potential tariffs. She also addressed Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly’s remarks about considering restrictions on energy exports to the U.S., calling it a threat that could lead to a national unity crisis.

Despite the discussions with Trump, Smith clarified that there was no payment required for access to the president-elect. She confirmed her attendance at Trump’s upcoming inauguration and expressed the need to stay vigilant in safeguarding Canada’s economic interests.

Looking ahead, Smith will continue to engage with key decision-makers in Washington to address the tariff issue and ensure that Canadian concerns are taken into account. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
