‘We haven’t got much time’: N.S. energy system operator takes on challenging renewables target

The newly appointed CEO of the Nova Scotia Independent Energy System Operator, Johnny Johnston, is gearing up to tackle the challenge of meeting the province’s 2030 renewable energy target. With a background in the energy sector and experience working in Ontario, Johnston is ready to lead the transition from Nova Scotia Power to the non-profit system operator.

The government of Nova Scotia laid the groundwork for this transition in 2024, shifting responsibilities such as managing electricity flow and procuring new energy sources to the system operator. Nova Scotia Power will continue to handle grid infrastructure and electricity delivery to customers.

Johnston recognizes the critical role the system operator will play in Nova Scotia’s shift to renewable energy. The province aims to generate 80% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 and eliminate coal usage entirely. Currently, coal and petroleum coke account for 35% of Nova Scotia Power’s energy mix, while renewables make up 48%.

Onshore wind and solar energy are expected to drive the transition to renewables, with the potential for offshore wind to play a significant role in the future. While nuclear energy may be considered down the road, Johnston believes it won’t be part of the province’s energy mix by 2030.

Premier Tim Houston has ambitious plans for offshore wind development, aiming to export power to other jurisdictions. Johnston sees offshore wind as a valuable resource for Nova Scotia, with economic benefits in the long term.

The system operator will work behind the scenes to integrate new renewable energy into the grid in a cost-effective manner. A detailed transition plan will unfold over the next two years, gradually shifting responsibilities from Nova Scotia Power to the system operator. Johnston aims for a seamless transition that will not disrupt electricity services for Nova Scotians.
