‘Weather bomb’ expected to hit Newfoundland on Sunday

This weekend, Newfoundland and Labrador are bracing for one of the season’s first strong winter storms. Special weather statements and winter storm warnings have been issued for parts of the province as Environment Canada predicts a mix of rain, wind, and snow to hit the island from Saturday night into Monday morning.
Meteorologist Wanda Batten from the Gander weather office described the incoming weather as a “weather bomb” coming in from the South. The Northern Peninsula is expected to receive at least 20 centimeters of snow accompanied by strong winds on Sunday. The snowfall is expected to intensify throughout the day and peak on Sunday night, with blowing snow and whiteout conditions anticipated.
Moving down to the Avalon Peninsula, a rainfall warning is in effect, with the area expected to receive a dusting of snow on Saturday night followed by up to 50 millimeters of rain into Monday evening. Strong winds of up to 120 km/h are also expected to accompany the rain, with wind warnings in effect for coastal areas.
Coastal flooding alerts have been issued from the Northern Peninsula to Ferryland, with elevated water levels and significant waves expected. Batten warned that the most severe conditions will coincide with high tides and could result in water inundating the coast.
Special weather statements are in effect for the remaining parts of the island, with uncertainty in the forecast as the weather system intensifies rapidly. Batten advised travelers to stay tuned to the forecast and be prepared for potential warnings to be issued.
For those traveling on Sunday, it is recommended to monitor the forecast closely for any updates or changes. Batten emphasized the importance of staying informed and prepared for potentially worsening weather conditions.
