Weather warnings in place for northeastern Nova Scotia, parts of Cape Breton

Thousands of residents in Nova Scotia were left without power on Sunday as a result of strong winds, Nova Scotia Power reported. The outage map indicated that over 13,000 customers were affected in the late afternoon, with the number decreasing to around 9,000 by the evening.

Environment Canada issued weather warnings for northeastern Nova Scotia and parts of Cape Breton due to the windy conditions. The national forecaster warned of winds reaching speeds of up to 90 km/h in Antigonish, Guysborough, Pictou, Richmond, and Cape Breton counties, as well as south of Mabou in Inverness County. These strong winds were expected to begin Sunday evening and gradually weaken by Monday morning.

Additionally, winter storm warnings were in effect for Victoria County and areas north of Mabou in Inverness County, with the possibility of snowfall amounts exceeding 20 centimeters. Environment Canada advised that communities near the coast from Mabou to Meat Cove in Inverness County would experience a mix of snow and rain with minimal accumulation.

In Victoria County, from Dingwall southward to Englishtown, residents were expected to encounter scattered showers and flurries, with the main concern being accumulating snowfall over higher terrain on Route 30. The forecast also predicted strong winds of up to 90 km/h to accompany these weather conditions.

The challenging weather conditions illustrated in the forecast were captured in an image showing a person walking on a windy day with an umbrella turned inside out. As Nova Scotians braced themselves for the impending storm, it served as a reminder to stay safe and prepared during such adverse weather events.
