‘We’re just trying to help out’: Annapolis Valley opens arms to wildfire evacuees, fire crews

The Long Lake wildfire in Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, has prompted an incredible outpouring of community support for both evacuees and firefighters battling the blaze. One heartwarming example of this support comes from Clarence, N.S., where dozens of volunteers came together to cook a turkey dinner for those displaced by the fire.

Organizer Maureen MacInnis, who lives just 11 kilometers from the wildfire, emphasized the importance of community in times of crisis. She expressed her belief that by working together to support one another, we can make the world a better place. The response from volunteers was immediate, with 100 to 120 meals served to those in need.

The Long Lake wildfire has forced over 1,000 people from their homes, with 20 houses confirmed destroyed. In response, ACDirt Excavation and Construction, a local company, has offered their services free of charge to help clear underbrush and trees from around homes near the evacuation zone.

CFB Greenwood has also played a crucial role in the firefighting efforts, providing space for aircraft to land and refuel, as well as accommodations for crews. Lieutenant Jeremy Zinck praised the East Coast hospitality shown to crews from the Northwest Territories and Manitoba, describing the support as overwhelming.

Community members have gone above and beyond to show their appreciation for the firefighters, with one crew even treated to a lobster boil thanks to donations from local fishermen. Lt. Zinck noted that the main challenge they face is finding space for all the donated food, as people are eager to help in any way they can.
