WH slams Dems’ ‘partisan games’ after Trump-foe Schiff calls for insider trading investigation over tariffs

The White House has strongly criticized Democrats for what they have deemed as “partisan games” following President Donald Trump’s decision to pause customized reciprocal tariffs for 90 days. The move was aimed at reassuring the markets and Americans about their economic security amidst ongoing media fearmongering.

White House spokesman Kush Desai slammed Democrats for not celebrating President Trump’s decisive action to address China’s unfair trade practices. Desai emphasized the importance of the President’s role in securing economic stability and accused Democrats of prioritizing political agendas over national interests.

In response to the tariff pause, Sens. Adam Schiff and Ruben Gallego penned a letter calling for an investigation into potential insider trading. They raised concerns about the Trump administration’s access to non-public information that could influence investment decisions, leading to legal and ethics issues.

President Trump, prior to the tariff pause, took to social media to reassure Americans, urging them to remain calm and expressing optimism about the country’s future. Despite initially stating he would not pause tariffs, Trump ultimately decided to do so in order to engage in negotiations with various nations that have historically imposed trade barriers on U.S. goods.

The tariff pause only applies to higher tariffs imposed on nations with trade barriers, with a lower 10% tariff now in effect. However, China was not included in this pause and faced a higher 125% tariff following retaliatory measures against the U.S.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that the tariff pause was necessary to allow President Trump to personally engage in negotiations with over 75 countries seeking to strike deals with the U.S. Trump’s decision was influenced by the need for bespoke solutions that require his direct involvement.

Despite market volatility, Trump denied that it played a role in his decision to pause tariffs, emphasizing his commitment to fulfilling his responsibilities as President. He defended his actions as necessary for the country’s economic well-being and criticized his predecessors for lacking the courage to take similar steps.

In conclusion, the White House’s response to Democrats’ criticism reflects the ongoing political tensions surrounding economic policies and trade negotiations. President Trump’s decision to pause tariffs has sparked debate and calls for investigation, highlighting the complex challenges of balancing economic interests with political considerations.
