White House mocks Gavin Newsom’s address to the nation amid LA riots

The White House Criticizes California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Address on Immigration Protests

The ongoing immigration protests in Los Angeles have sparked a war of words between California Governor Gavin Newsom and the White House. In a recent address to the nation, Newsom accused President Donald Trump of undermining democracy by deploying National Guard troops and Marines to address the riots.

White House assistant to the president and director of communications, Steven Cheung, didn’t hold back in his criticism of Newsom’s address. Cheung accused Newsom of prioritizing the production of a video over fulfilling his duties as governor. He also took a swipe at the audio quality of the video, likening it to Newsom’s leadership.

Cheung further suggested that Newsom had enlisted the help of former President Joe Biden and former Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign manager, who had previously warned of a threat to democracy during the 2024 campaign cycle. This insinuation added fuel to the fire of the ongoing feud between Newsom and the Trump administration.

In response to Newsom’s address, other White House officials defended the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration, emphasizing that President Trump was elected to enforce the immigration laws passed by elected representatives. Deputy assistant to the president, Alex Pfieffer, accused California of trying to subvert democracy.

Newsom, on the other hand, denounced Trump’s deployment of troops to Los Angeles as a brazen abuse of power. He highlighted the arrests of over 200 individuals in connection to the protests and warned that democracy was under assault before our eyes. Newsom’s call for peaceful protests was met with sarcasm from White House deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, who shared a photo of a protester waving a California flag amidst fumes with a mocking comment.

The clash between Newsom and the White House escalated as Trump defended the deployment of National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles. While Trump justified the move as necessary to prevent destruction in the city, Newsom criticized the unused troops sitting in federal buildings without orders. He argued that the deployment violated state sovereignty, as governors typically oversee National Guard troops.

As the back-and-forth between Newsom and the White House continues, the debate over the handling of immigration protests and the role of federal troops in states remains a contentious issue. The clash of ideologies and power dynamics between the California governor and the Trump administration underscores the deep political divide within the nation.
