White House questions why Ivy League institutions receive so much federal funding amid feud with Harvard

The White House has come down hard on Ivy League institutions, particularly Harvard University, accusing them of engaging in “egregious illegal behavior.” The Trump administration has been in a heated battle with Harvard over proposed changes to the university’s governance and admissions process.

Harvard’s refusal to comply with the administration’s requests led to the announcement on Monday that over $2 billion in federal funding would be frozen for the institution. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that President Trump has been questioning why institutions like Harvard receive such substantial federal funding.

“We have the antisemitism task force, which the president promised and delivered on,” Leavitt explained. “The antisemitism task forces across the government, representatives from various federal agencies who meet on a weekly basis to discuss the question that you just raised. And I think a lot of Americans are wondering why their tax dollars are going to these universities when they are not only indoctrinating our nation’s students but also allowing such egregious illegal behavior to occur.”

In response, Harvard University President Alan M. Garber stated that the administration’s demands extended beyond addressing antisemitism and veered into unconstitutional territory. The university refused to comply with requests that involved governmental regulation of “intellectual conditions” on campus, including auditing viewpoints and eliminating diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

The Trump administration had established the Federal Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism in an effort to address bias targeting Jewish students on college campuses. The task force monitors conduct at various universities, including Columbia University, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, and others.

Harvard’s decision not to comply with the administration’s demands has sparked criticism from the task force, which condemned the university’s “entitlement mindset” and emphasized the need for elite institutions to uphold civil rights laws in exchange for federal funding.

The ongoing clash between the Trump administration and Harvard University underscores the broader debate surrounding federal funding for universities and the responsibilities that come with receiving taxpayer support. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Harvard and other Ivy League institutions will navigate the demands set forth by the administration.
