White House scorches ‘moron’ left-wing senator for seething over ‘obvious’ parody account

The White House recently took aim at Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, calling him a “moron” on social media after he posted an expletive-laden response to a parody account he mistakenly believed belonged to Lara Trump, the president’s daughter-in-law.

In a scathing message posted on Friday, the White House’s Rapid Response 47 account slammed Murphy for his apparent misunderstanding, stating, “You are a moron, Chris. It is obvious this page is not affiliated with President Trump, his family, or the administration. We do, however, support your right to make such a statement, no matter how imbecilic it makes you look.” The rapid response account was launched in January to combat “fake news.”

The controversy began when Murphy singled out a social media post he thought Lara Trump had made about border czar Tom Homan potentially arresting Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. However, it was later revealed that the post came from a parody fan account called the “Lara Trump Page,” not her official account.

Murphy’s response to the post criticized the Trump administration for discussing free speech while advocating for the arrest of a Democrat. He took to Twitter to express his outrage, stating, “It takes some f—ng gall to have Vance lecturing Europe on ‘free speech’ when at the exact same time the Trump regime is threatening Democrats back home with arrest if they even explain people’s rights to them.”

The community note on Murphy’s tweet clarified that he had responded to a parody account and that Lara Trump had not issued such a post. The White House’s rapid response account also pointed out that the original message was from a parody account, urging Murphy to fact-check before making accusations.

The controversy arose in the context of Ocasio-Cortez’s office sharing a webinar guide on “Know Your Rights” for illegal immigrants to avoid deportation amid the Trump administration’s border crackdown. Homan, the former acting director of ICE and current border czar, raised concerns about the legality of Ocasio-Cortez’s guide and stated that he was working with the Department of Justice to determine if she had crossed a legal line.

In light of the ongoing debate surrounding immigration policies and free speech, the exchange between Murphy, the White House, and the parody account highlights the challenges of navigating social media in today’s political landscape.
