Whitmer says US in ‘constitutional crisis’ one day after appearing with Trump in Michigan

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, D-Mich., recently made headlines after stating that the United States is currently in a “constitutional crisis.” Whitmer, who appeared alongside President Donald Trump in Michigan on his 100th day as president, expressed her concerns about the administration’s disregard for court orders and the rule of law.
In a social media clip posted by Jon Favreau, former President Barack Obama’s speechwriter turned “Pod Save America” host, Whitmer was asked if she believed the U.S. was facing a constitutional crisis. Without hesitation, Whitmer responded, “We are. I think that no one is above the law. The thought that we’ve got an administration that is just blatantly violating court orders should, I think, scare everybody. This is a very serious moment.”
As Democrats continue to describe the current political climate as a constitutional crisis, Whitmer has been vocal about the potential dangers that Trump’s policies may pose to Michigan’s auto industry and her constituents impacted by natural disasters. Despite her diplomatic approach in addressing these issues, Whitmer has faced criticism from within her own party for her interactions with Trump.
During a subsequent exchange with Favreau, Whitmer was challenged on whether she had spoken out against Trump’s targeting of individuals and institutions in Michigan. While Whitmer acknowledged that she had not directly addressed this issue with the president, she emphasized her commitment to advocating for the rights and freedoms of all individuals in her state.
Whitmer also called on congressional Republicans to stand up to Trump and ensure that court orders are enforced. She expressed hope that the courts would have the final say in matters of constitutional significance and urged her colleagues to prioritize the foundations of the country over partisan politics.
Despite the backlash she has received for her interactions with Trump, Whitmer has remained steadfast in her efforts to address key issues affecting Michigan. From securing new fighter jets for a local airbase to advocating for disaster relief and economic growth, Whitmer has shown a willingness to engage with the administration in pursuit of positive outcomes for her constituents.
As speculation mounts about Whitmer’s potential presidential ambitions in 2028, her actions and statements in recent months have garnered national attention. Whether she continues to navigate the political landscape with diplomacy or takes a more confrontational approach remains to be seen, but one thing is clear – Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is determined to fight for the people of Michigan and uphold the principles of democracy in the face of a challenging political climate.
