Whoopi Goldberg launches All Women’s Sports Network
Whoopi Goldberg, the iconic actor and comedian, has recently launched the All Women’s Sports Network (AWSN), fulfilling a dream she has had for 16 years. In an interview with CNN Sport’s Don Riddell, Goldberg expressed her determination to create a platform dedicated solely to women’s sports, filling a void in the sports media landscape.
AWSN, now available in 65 countries and broadcasting 24/7, offers live and delayed coverage of various women’s sports events, including the UEFA Women’s Nations League, the Women’s Tennis Association, and the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series. With the recent surge in popularity of women’s sports, particularly in the WNBA, women’s soccer, and women’s golf, Goldberg aims to showcase a wide range of sports from around the world.
The network’s goal is to provide a platform for women in sports that may not receive adequate coverage from mainstream sports networks. Despite the increasing prominence of female athletes, studies show that women’s sports receive significantly less television coverage compared to men’s sports. Goldberg hopes that AWSN will help bridge this gap and bring more attention to women’s achievements in sports.
One of Goldberg’s main objectives for AWSN is to inspire and empower women globally. She believes that showcasing women’s accomplishments in sports not only benefits women but also contributes to the overall advancement of society. By highlighting the resilience and talent of female athletes, Goldberg aims to send a powerful message that “When she wins, we all win.”
While AWSN focuses on women in sports, Goldberg emphasizes that the network is inclusive and welcomes all sports fans, regardless of gender. She believes that sports should be about celebrating the best athletes, regardless of their gender, and hopes to attract a diverse audience to the network.
In addition to her work with AWSN, Goldberg has also invested in other ventures that align with her values, such as the Black-focused streaming platform Blkfam and a line of cannabis products named after her mother and brother. However, she considers AWSN to be one of her proudest achievements, alongside her daughter.
Looking ahead, Goldberg envisions AWSN as a lasting legacy that will continue to impact future generations. She is excited about the possibility of shaping the future of women in sports and leaving a positive mark on the world through her work with the network.
