Why a majority or minority Liberal government is still too close to call

The Liberals have emerged victorious in the recent election, but the final outcome is still uncertain as the CBC Decision Desk has not yet determined whether Prime Minister Mark Carney will lead a minority or majority government. This is due to several tight races across the country that are still too close to call.

Elections Canada had temporarily paused counting special and advance polls overnight but has since resumed the process. The high voter turnout, as well as an increased number of mail-in ballots and advance votes, have led to a delay in finalizing the results. The agency expects to have preliminary results later in the day.

CBC’s Decision Desk has identified around a dozen ridings where the outcome could be influenced by the special ballot and advance poll counts. These races are all in ridings where the Liberals are currently in second place, indicating a potential shift in the results.

Last night, the Liberals saw an increase in projected seats from 163 to 168 as advance and special ballots were tallied. In some cases, deficits of several hundred or even 1,000 votes were overcome, leading to a change in the projected winners in certain ridings.

Updates on the vote count can be followed on CBC’s live results page for the most up-to-date information on the election results.
