Widespread power outage in Quebec after severe thunderstorms, tornado
MONTREAL — There are power outages in Quebec this morning after severe thunderstorms — and at least one tornado — hit the province on Thursday.
Hydro-Québec says nearly 170,000 customers are without electricity, after a peak of about 300,000.
Most of the outages are in Montreal and the regions to the south and north.
The hydropower company says it could take up to two days to restore service to all customers due to the extent of damage to the network caused by the storm.
Environment Canada says up to 100 millimeters of rain fell in the Montreal area on Thursday, with wind gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour.
The Federal Weather Bureau has confirmed at least one tornado touched down in Quebec, in a field in the town of Mirabel, north of Montreal, with no reports of damage.
A tornado that struck Ottawa’s Barrhaven neighborhood on Thursday damaged more than 100 homes.
