Wildfire smoke calls for air quality clearance for most of NB

Wildfires in Quebec prompted Environment Canada to issue an air quality statement for much of New Brunswick on Sunday.

The Weather Bureau has issued statements for nearly all of the county, except for areas along the coast of Fundy and Charlotte County.

Earlier on Sunday, the agency had issued statements for only the northern parts of the province.

In its statement, Environment Canada says some of the smoke is expected to drop to near ground level.

“People with lung disease (such as asthma) or heart disease, older adults, children, pregnant people and those who work outside the home are at greater risk for health effects caused by wildfire smoke,” the statement said.

The agency advises people to keep their doors and windows closed and to wear a properly fitted respirator-type mask, such as an N95, if you must go outside.

The air quality statement is in effect for Sunday night. There is no indication when the statement can be withdrawn.
