Wimbledon: Shapovalov from Canada, Andreescu advance

LONDON –

Canada’s Denis Shapovalov defeated France’s Gregoire Barrere 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7) in the second round of men’s singles at Wimbledon on Thursday.

Shapovalov, the No. 26 seed from Richmond Hill, Ont., took an hour and 52 minutes to take the win. He will then face fourth-seeded Casper Ruud from Norway or British wildcard Liam Broady.

Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ontario won her opening women’s singles match, recording a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Hungary’s Anna Bondar.

The 50th-seeded Canadian will face 26th-seeded Anhelina Kalinina from Ukraine in the second round.

Many matches were suspended or postponed due to wet weather at the All England Club during the first few days of the Grand Slam event.

Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., Milos Raonic of Thornhill, Ont., and Gabriela Dabrowski of Ottawa were scheduled to play later Thursday.
