Winnipeg Coun. Jason Schreyer dead at 57

The City of Winnipeg is in mourning following the unexpected passing of Coun. Jason Schreyer, a beloved representative of the Elmwood-East Kildonan ward. Council members shared the sad news in a statement released on Wednesday morning, describing Schreyer as a dedicated advocate for his community and a passionate voice in the council chamber. While no details about the cause of his death were provided, the loss of Schreyer has left a profound impact on his colleagues and constituents.
Son of former Manitoba premier and governor general of Canada, Ed Schreyer, and Lily Schreyer, Jason Schreyer was first elected to city council in 2014 after defeating one-term councillor Thomas Steen. He went on to secure re-election in 2018 and 2022 with strong support from the community. Throughout his time on council, Schreyer was known for addressing a range of municipal issues, from food security to community safety and construction inflation.
In addition to his work in council, Schreyer was also recognized for his unique approach to the traditional prayer recitation at the start of meetings. Often opting to sing instead, he brought a sense of joy and creativity to the proceedings. His warm personality and sense of humor endeared him to his colleagues, with Councillor Ross Eadie referring to him as his best friend and North Kildonan Coun. Jeff Browaty expressing deep sorrow at the news.
Mayor Scott Gillingham expressed shock and sadness over the loss of Schreyer, highlighting his dedication to public service and his continued affiliation with the NDP and Winnipeg’s labor movement. The mayor recalled how councillors gathered to share stories and memories in Schreyer’s honor, emphasizing his impact both in and out of politics. Known for his love of music and talent in multiple languages, Schreyer’s presence will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
As the city comes to terms with this loss, plans are underway to commemorate Schreyer’s legacy, potentially focusing on his interest in food security. The mayor’s office has pledged support to Schreyer’s executive assistant, Chris Hurley, in managing the additional workload in the weeks ahead. Discussions about a byelection for the Elmwood-East Kildonan ward will be tabled for future consideration, allowing time for the community to grieve and honor the memory of Coun. Jason Schreyer.
