Winnipeg skip Carruthers opens St. John’s curling event beating 3-man Swiss rink

Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers secured a 7-5 victory over Yannick Schwaller’s Swiss team at the Kioti National in St. John’s. Carruthers, accompanied by Kyle Doering filling in for Derek Samagalski, managed to steal a single point in the eighth end. The game took an exciting turn when Carruthers scored two points in the seventh end, ultimately sealing the win as the opposing team’s tap attempt fell short.

Yannick Schwaller, who recently underwent knee surgery, had to sit out of the game. His brother, Kim Schwaller, took over as second, with Sven Michel moving up to third and Benoit Schwarz-van Berkel rounding out the team.

In other matches, Mike McEwen from Winnipeg triumphed over Switzerland’s Michael Brunner with a score of 7-2. Scotland’s Ross Whyte also claimed a 7-2 victory against Switzerland’s Marco Hoesli, while Bruce Mouat outplayed James Craik in a 7-4 showdown between Scottish teams. The event at the Mary Brown’s Centre featured three more draws later in the day.

Meanwhile, Kaitlyn Lawes from Winnipeg faced a 7-3 defeat against Sweden’s Anna Hasselborg in her game. Lawes was the sole Canadian skip in action during Draw 2. Other results included Japan’s Satsuki Fujisawa defeating Switzerland’s Xenia Schwaller 8-5 and South Korea’s Eun-Ji Gim emerging victorious over Japan’s Sayaka Yoshimura with a score of 6-3. Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni dominated Japan’s Momoha Tabata with a 7-2 win after scoring three points in the sixth end.

The competition is ongoing at the Grand Slam of Curling event, with two more draws scheduled for later in the day. Fans can expect thrilling matchups and intense gameplay as the tournament progresses towards its conclusion on Sunday.
