Winnipeg’s rock history put on the map as road gets honorary Bachman-Turner Overdrive name

Winnipeg’s iconic Disraeli Freeway has recently received an honorary name in honor of a legendary Canadian band that played a significant role in putting the city on the rock ‘n’ roll map. The southernmost section of the street, located off Main Street, has officially been named Bachman-Turner Overdrive during a special unveiling ceremony that took place on a chilly Friday morning.

The decision to rename the street came after a motion was passed by the city council’s property committee, proposed by Mynarski Coun. Ross Eadie, to recognize the band’s contributions to the music industry and frontman Randy Bachman’s efforts in showcasing Winnipeg’s talent on a global scale. As the city installed the signs bearing the new honorary name, Randy Bachman humorously remarked on the weather, jokingly attributing it as the reason he left Winnipeg in the first place.

Bachman, who rose to fame as the guitarist for The Guess Who before forming Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1973 with his brothers Robbie and Tim Bachman, along with Fred Turner, expressed his gratitude for the recognition. The band, known for hits like “Takin’ Care of Business” and “You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet,” was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2014.

During the ceremony, Bachman paid tribute to his late brothers and bandmates, acknowledging their role in the band’s success. Fred Turner, another founding member of Bachman-Turner Overdrive, also attended the event and expressed his surprise and gratitude for the honor, emphasizing the significance of returning to his hometown.

The band’s influence on Winnipeg’s music scene was highlighted by attendees like drummer Matt Derraugh, who credited Bachman-Turner Overdrive for inspiring aspiring musicians in the city. Ronnie Ladobruk, a local guitarist, shared how the band’s music shaped his own musical journey, praising their exceptional talent and powerful sound.

It symbolizes the endless possibilities that can be achieved through perseverance and commitment, inspiring others to carve their own path in the music industry.

Overall, the renaming of the street pays homage to a band that not only shaped Winnipeg’s musical landscape but also left a lasting impact on the rock ‘n’ roll genre. Their timeless music continues to resonate with fans, showcasing the talent and creativity that originated from the heart of Winnipeg.
