Wisconsin voters decide to enshrine voter ID law in state constitution

Wisconsin voters have approved a proposal to enshrine the state’s voter ID law in the state constitution, according to the Associated Press. The vote was called at 9:48 p.m. EST on Tuesday, solidifying the requirement for voters to present photo ID at the polls.

This measure elevates the existing voter ID law to a constitutional amendment in Wisconsin. The state already mandates that voters show photo identification in order to participate in elections, but this new development cements the requirement in the state’s highest legal document.

President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to celebrate the addition of voter ID to the state constitution in Wisconsin. In a post on Tuesday night, he exclaimed, “VOTER I.D. JUST APPROVED IN WISCONSIN ELECTION. Democrats fought hard against this, presumably so they can CHEAT. This is a BIG WIN FOR REPUBLICANS, MAYBE THE BIGGEST WIN OF THE NIGHT. IT SHOULD ALLOW US TO WIN WISCONSIN, LIKE I JUST DID IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, FOR MANY YEARS TO COME!”

Wisconsin is one of nine states that currently require voters to present photo ID, with the state having some of the strictest requirements, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. In total, 36 states have laws in place that either require or request some form of identification from voters.

This move to solidify the voter ID law in the state constitution has garnered attention and sparked debate among politicians and voters alike. The decision reflects a broader national conversation surrounding election integrity and voter identification requirements.

As the debate continues, it is crucial for individuals to stay informed and engaged in discussions surrounding voting rights and election laws. The Associated Press contributed to this report, providing valuable insights into the implications of enshrining the voter ID law in Wisconsin’s state constitution.
