Columbia’s accreditation comes into question amid latest Trump attack

The Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights recently sent a notice to the accrediting body that audits Columbia University, informing them that the Ivy League school is currently not meeting their standards for accreditation. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) is responsible for ensuring that member schools like Columbia uphold standards of academic quality, integrity, and institutional effectiveness. Only institutions accredited by Department of Education-recognized accreditors are eligible to participate in federal financial aid programs.

This notice is the latest development in the Trump administration’s efforts to address antisemitism on Columbia’s campus. Following an investigation in February, the administration decided to cancel $400 million in federal grants due to the university’s failure to protect Jewish students from antisemitic harassment. In response, Columbia agreed to implement changes such as overhauling protest policies, enhancing safety measures, and reorganizing the Middle Eastern studies department. They also adopted a new campus-wide definition of antisemitism.

Education Secretary Linda McMahon emphasized the importance of accreditors in upholding federal antidiscrimination laws and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards. The Department of Education expects the Commission to keep them informed of actions taken to ensure Columbia’s compliance with these standards. Linda McMahon, who was confirmed as Secretary of Education in March, highlighted the responsibility of university accreditors in determining federal student aid eligibility.

In a separate move, Columbia announced plans to lay off around 180 staff members in an effort to maintain financial flexibility. This decision was made in light of the terminated federal grants and the need to navigate through uncertain times in higher education. Acting Columbia University President Claire Shipman acknowledged the challenges faced by the institution and emphasized the need to make strategic decisions for the future.

Despite reaching out for comment, Fox News Digital did not receive a response from Columbia by the publication deadline. The ongoing developments at Columbia University highlight the complexities and responsibilities involved in maintaining accreditation standards and addressing issues of discrimination on college campuses.
