Woman arrested in connection with 2022 stabbing death in Halifax
Halifax Regional Police have arrested a woman in connection with the death of another woman in Spryfield last year.
Const. John MacLeod said the 31-year-old woman was arrested without incident at a home in Halifax at 9:50 a.m. Thursday morning and is being interviewed at police headquarters.
The arrest is in connection with the investigation into the stabbing of 37-year-old Chauntel Lizette MacIntyre, who was found fatally injured at the intersection of Sylvia Avenue and Herring Cove Road at about 12:45 a.m. on May 17, 2022.
MacIntyre was rushed to hospital but died of her injuries.
MacLeod said based on the time of the arrest and the length of time interviews can take, it’s unlikely there will be any update on charges or a court appearance Thursday.
“They’re interviewing her, but at this point I don’t know where specifically that will lead,” he said. “Obviously, the end goal is to bring the case before the courts, but at this point they’re in the process of doing the interviews and we’ll have to see where that goes.”
He said he expects to have more information Friday morning.
“Most likely, from past experience, it will be the morning before we have information on whether shes been released or charges have been laid.”
Police have 24 hours after someone is arrested to either charge or release them.
MacLeod said the arrest was a result of ongoing work on the case.
“As a result of the investigation, they now feel they’re in a position to make the arrest. They’ll conduct their interviews and see where it takes them from there.”
At the time of MacIntyre’s killing police said they didn’t believe it was a random incident, but MacLeod said Thursday that he hasn’t been told whether or not she and the woman arrested are known to each other.
MacLeod said investigators think there are people who have information about MacIntyre’s killing and are asking them to contact police.
