Woman found dead on Edmonton riverbank remembered as kind-hearted mother

The tragic death of 43-year-old Ashley Burke along the banks of the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton has left her family and community devastated. Burke, described as a caring and kind-hearted mother, was found dead on Dec. 30, a victim of intimate partner violence. The accused, Daniel Boothman, has been charged with second-degree murder in her death.

Burke’s daughter, Abigail Michele Robson, is still trying to come to terms with the heartbreaking loss of her mother. She remembers Burke as a strong and selfless woman who always put others before herself. Despite the challenges she faced, Burke was known for her East Coast charm and willingness to help anyone in need.

Robson recalls a happy childhood in Pictou, Nova Scotia, where her mother worked at a local pizza restaurant before moving to Alberta for a fresh start. As Robson grew older, the bond between mother and daughter grew stronger, with Burke becoming not just a parent but also a best friend.

Although Burke struggled with substance use issues in recent years, she was working hard to stay clean and start over, with the support of her daughter. Robson emphasizes that her mother should not be defined by her struggles, as she was a loving and devoted mother above all else.

As the family awaits answers from the ongoing investigation, Robson hopes her mother’s death will raise awareness about the dangers of intimate partner violence and the high rates of such incidents in Alberta. She encourages anyone facing domestic violence to seek help without shame or fear.

Funeral arrangements for Burke are still being made, with plans to lay her to rest in the family plot in Pictou. Robson cherishes the chance to say goodbye to her mother and holds onto cherished memories, like a matching infinity symbol bracelet they exchanged as gifts three years ago.

The symbol of infinity represents the eternal bond between mother and daughter, a reminder that they will always be together. Robson plans to get the same tattoo as a tribute to their unbreakable connection.

For those affected by family or intimate partner violence, support is available through crisis lines and local services like 211 Alberta or the Connect Line. In cases of immediate danger, it’s crucial to call 911 for assistance. Burke’s tragic story serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking help and speaking out against domestic violence to prevent further tragedies.
