World Juniors: Canada holds citizenship ceremony ahead of hockey tournament

Ottawa is set to host the exciting IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, bringing together hockey fans from around the world.

One of the highlights leading up to the tournament was a special citizenship ceremony held at the Canadian Tire Centre. This unique event saw 26 individuals from 14 different countries officially becoming Canadian citizens, marking a significant moment in their lives.

Gonzalo Lozano, one of the new citizens, shared his emotional journey to citizenship. Originally coming to Canada as a university student in Ottawa, he expressed his gratitude for finally achieving his dream of becoming a Canadian citizen, with his young son cheering him on from the stands.

For the first time, the citizenship ceremony coincided with the World Juniors, showcasing the diverse and inclusive nature of Canada. Hockey Canada’s Dean MacIntosh highlighted the synergies between the game of hockey and the values of community, integrity, and fair play that the new citizens bring to the country.

As the Canadian Tire Centre gears up to host the World Juniors, the new citizens are eager to experience their first hockey game. Olusola Matthew Babatunde, among the new Canadians, expressed his excitement at being part of the event with his family.

The pre-tournament game between Canada and Czechia saw an exciting match, with Canada emerging victorious with a 3-2 win. The stage is now set for the official start of the tournament on Boxing Day, where Team Canada will face off against Finland at the CTC.

Amidst the anticipation and excitement, Gonzalo Lozano proudly donned his first hockey jersey, declaring his allegiance to Team Canada. The blend of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and national pride at the World Juniors reflects the spirit of unity and celebration that defines Canada.
