World-renowned Tsimshian artist’s carving found by his B.C. neighbours on a sailboat in Mexico

A couple from Hazelton, B.C., is gearing up for an epic round-the-world sailing trip after a serendipitous discovery on a boat they purchased in Mexico. Shannon and Steve McPhail, self-described adventurers, had been planning the voyage for when their youngest daughter graduates high school next year. However, Shannon had been feeling anxious about the upcoming trip until they stumbled upon something that made her feel like it was meant to be.
While on a sailing trip along the west coast of B.C. and Alaska, Steve found his dream boat online—a Fast Passage made in Canada. After placing a bid on a boat in Mexico, which was unexpectedly accepted, Steve traveled to Guaymas to work on the vessel that he admits “needs a little bit of love.”
During his time on the boat, Steve came across some artwork left behind, and one particular carving caught his eye. To his disbelief, the signature on the carving read “Roy Vickers.” Roy Henry Vickers, a world-renowned Tsimshian artist and close friend of the McPhails, lives just 15 kilometers away from their home in Hazelton. The discovery left Steve in awe, prompting him to message Roy and Shannon immediately.
Vickers, known for his exceptional work such as the King Salmon Housefront displayed at the Vancouver International Airport, was taken aback by the news of his carving resurfacing. The carving, made from mahogany, was a unique piece created for a friend who shared the same dream as the McPhails—to sail around the world. The artwork, a likeness of Vickers with intricate details, instilled a sense of confidence and connection for the upcoming voyage.
As the McPhails prepare for their journey, they plan to continue working on the boat and set sail for home in the spring. However, Steve humorously acknowledges that a sailor’s plans are subject to change. Despite the uncertainties, Shannon feels reassured by the carving’s presence and the intention behind it, symbolizing the spirit of exploration and safety during their adventure.
The unique encounter with Roy Vickers’ carving has sparked a newfound sense of energy and purpose for the McPhails as they embark on their round-the-world sailing trip. With the spirit of adventure and a touch of destiny guiding their path, Shannon and Steve are ready to set sail into the unknown with confidence and enthusiasm.
