World Series champion Shohei Ohtani has surgery to repair torn labrum in shoulder

Shohei Ohtani Undergoes Shoulder Surgery, Expected to be Ready for Spring Training

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani recently underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a labrum tear in his left shoulder. The injury occurred during Game 2 of the World Series on Oct. 26 when Ohtani dislocated his shoulder while sliding into second base on a stolen base attempt. Despite the setback, Ohtani returned to play the next three games and helped lead the Dodgers to a championship victory over the Yankees in five games.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the team’s head physician, in Los Angeles. The Dodgers have stated that they expect Ohtani to be fully recovered and ready for spring training in February.

During the World Series, Ohtani struggled at the plate, going just 1-for-11 with a walk. However, his presence in the lineup was crucial for the team, as he had been a key contributor throughout the season. Ohtani made history during the regular season by becoming the first player to achieve at least 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in the same season.

The 30-year-old signed a lucrative 10-year, $700-million US deal with the Dodgers last year. Despite the recent surgery, it is unclear whether Ohtani’s return as a pitcher in 2025 will be affected. He underwent surgery on his throwing elbow last off-season, which sidelined him from pitching in 2024.

The Dodgers are set to begin spring training in early February, ahead of most other teams, as they are scheduled to participate in the Tokyo Series against the Chicago Cubs on March 18 and 19. Ohtani’s recovery progress will be closely monitored as he aims to return to peak performance for the upcoming season.
