Writer-director James Toback ordered to pay $1.68 billion US in sexual abuse case
A New York jury has awarded a staggering $1.68 billion US in damages to 40 women who came forward with accusations of sexual abuse against writer and director James Toback. The allegations span a period of 35 years, with the abuse taking place between 1979 and 2014. This landmark decision comes as a result of a lawsuit filed in Manhattan in 2022, following the implementation of a one-year window for individuals to bring forth sexual assault claims, even if they occurred decades ago.
This verdict is one of the largest jury awards in the era of the #MeToo movement and in the history of New York state. Attorney Brad Beckworth, representing the plaintiffs, emphasized the significance of such a substantial verdict in sending a message to powerful individuals who mistreat women. The $1.68 billion US damages include $280 million US in compensatory damages and $1.4 billion US in punitive damages.
Mary Monahan, one of the lead plaintiffs in the case, described the jury award as validation for herself and the other women who bravely came forward. Toback, 80, had argued that New York’s extension of the statute of limitations on sexual abuse cases infringed upon his constitutional rights.
