YouTube daredevil arrested by Indian authorities after visiting remote island where US missionary was killed
A daredevil YouTube influencer has recently made headlines after being arrested for attempting to make illegal contact with the indigenous people of a remote Indian island. Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, a 24-year-old from Arizona, reportedly traveled to the restricted North Sentinel Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal.
Polyakov’s alleged motive for visiting the region was his passion for adventure and extreme challenges, according to local police. This was reportedly his third attempt to make the trip to the island. Armed with a coconut and a can of Diet Coke as offerings for the Sentinelese people, Polyakov was also wearing a GoPro camera to document his actions. He claimed unofficial representation of the U.S. as he stepped foot on the island.
Despite spending only five minutes on the island, collecting samples and recording footage, Polyakov did not make direct contact with any indigenous people. He later retreated to a boat offshore, where local fishermen spotted him and alerted the authorities. Polyakov, who goes by the name Neo-Orientalist on YouTube, has a history of documenting his travels through challenging and unconventional locations.
The Sentinelese people, who inhabit North Sentinel Island, have a strict policy against outsider contact in order to preserve their unique way of life. The tragic death of an American missionary who attempted to make contact with the tribe in 2018 serves as a reminder of the dangers of disregarding these restrictions.
Caroline Pearce, director of Survival International, a nonprofit organization advocating for the rights of indigenous and tribal communities, condemned Polyakov’s actions as deeply disturbing. She emphasized the importance of respecting the wishes of uncontacted peoples and protecting their territories from exploitation and invasion.
Polyakov is currently in judicial custody and is scheduled for a hearing on April 17. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by uncontacted indigenous peoples around the world, who are often threatened by encroachment on their lands by outsiders.
As governments continue to disregard international laws protecting these vulnerable communities, the need for increased awareness and advocacy for their rights becomes ever more crucial.
