Zakir Hussain, a legendary figure in Indian classical music known for his mastery of the tabla and groundbreaking collaborations across genres, has died at the age of 73. His family confirmed that he passed away from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease, at a hospital in San Francisco.
Throughout his illustrious career spanning six decades, Hussain’s influence as a teacher, mentor, and cultural ambassador has left an enduring impact on musicians worldwide. He was revered for his unparalleled skill on the tabla, a percussion instrument central to Indian classical music.
Born in Mumbai in 1951 to tabla maestro Alla Rakha, Hussain began his musical journey at a young age under his father’s guidance. Renowned for his virtuosity, he collaborated with renowned artists such as George Harrison, Charles Lloyd, Mickey Hart, and Yo-Yo Ma, transcending boundaries and introducing Indian music to global audiences.
Hussain’s legacy extends beyond his instrumental prowess, as he formed the groundbreaking fusion band “Shakti” with jazz guitarist John McLaughlin in 1973. The group’s innovative blend of Indian and jazz music garnered international acclaim, showcasing Hussain’s ability to push artistic boundaries.
His musical achievements were further recognized in 2024 when he became the first Indian musician to win three Grammy awards in a single year. His contributions to global music were also honored with the prestigious Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award, in 2023.
