Zelenskyy rejects Trump’s claim that Putin wants peace in Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has firmly rejected President Donald Trump’s assertions that Russia is genuinely interested in pursuing peace. Zelenskyy made this declaration during an interview on ABC News’ “This Week” with host Martha Raddatz. Despite ongoing ceasefire negotiations, Zelenskyy argued that Russian President Vladimir Putin is adamant about prolonging the conflict.

In response to Trump’s belief that Putin is sincere about seeking peace, Zelenskyy emphasized, “Trust me, we understand the Russians much better, the mentality of the Russians, than the Americans understand the Russians. I know for sure Putin doesn’t want to stop the war.” He dismissed Trump’s comparison of the Russia-Ukraine conflict to children fighting in a park, asserting that the situation is far more serious than a mere playground scuffle.

“We are not playing in the park with the Russians like two boys, two kids. Putin is not a kid. So we can’t compare and we cannot say okay, let them fight for a while,” Zelenskyy stated, recounting the tragic loss suffered by a Ukrainian man whose wife and three children were killed in missile strikes. He condemned Putin as a “murderer” who is actively perpetuating violence in Ukraine.

Trump’s analogy of letting two fighting children be before intervening was shared with Putin during a recent call, where he suggested that perhaps continued conflict was necessary. However, Zelenskyy’s firm stance against Putin’s aggression indicates a stark contrast in perspectives between the Ukrainian leader and the former U.S. president.

Despite two rounds of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, little progress has been made towards a lasting resolution. Zelenskyy’s unwavering commitment to defending Ukraine’s sovereignty underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
