12-year-old girl discovers ancient Egyptian amulet while on a hiking trip with family in Israel
During a family trip near the archaeological site of Tel Qana in Hod Hasharon, Israel, 12-year-old Dafna Filshteiner made an extraordinary discovery that led to the unearthing of an ancient item dating back approximately 3,500 years. The Israel Antiquities Authority revealed that Dafna found an Egyptian amulet from the New Kingdom period, shaped like a dung beetle. This beetle was considered sacred in Ancient Egypt, symbolizing new life.
Dafna stumbled upon the amulet while hiking with her family, initially mistaking it for an ordinary stone or bead. However, upon closer inspection, she noticed intricate decorations on the stone and insisted it was something special. After conducting research online, Dafna and her mother realized the significance of their find and immediately contacted the Antiquities Authority.
Dr. Yitzhak Paz, a Bronze Age expert with the Israel Antiquities Authority, further examined the amulet and noted its unique features. The scarab-shaped artifact displayed two scorpions, representing the Egyptian goddess Serket, known for protecting pregnant mothers. Additionally, the amulet featured the nefer symbol, meaning ‘good’ or ‘chosen,’ as well as a symbol resembling a royal staff.
For her discovery, Dafna received a certificate of good citizenship from the Israel Antiquities Authority. The amulet is now on display at the Jay and Jeanie Schottenstein National Campus for the Archaeology of Israel in Jerusalem, where the public can admire its historical significance.
Dafna’s story exemplifies how remarkable archaeological finds can come from unexpected sources, such as young individuals with a keen eye for discovery. Similar instances have occurred worldwide, like a 9-year-old boy finding a hand axe from the late Middle Paleolithic period in England and a 12-year-old boy and his mother discovering a gold bracelet in West Sussex, believed to be ancient Roman jewelry.
