23-year-old hiker found after surviving for 2 weeks in Australian mountain range

A 23-year-old medical student, Hadi Nazari, who went missing in the remote Australian mountain range for two weeks, has been found safe and sound. Nazari, from Melbourne, disappeared on December 26, 2024, after he separated from his hiking companions to take photos in the Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales. He survived on two muesli bars, foraged berries, and creek water during his time in the wilderness.

The rescue of Nazari came after he approached a group of hikers on Wednesday afternoon, expressing that he was lost and in need of water. Police Inspector Josh Broadfoot, who led the search operation, expressed his amazement at Nazari’s resilience and positive spirits upon being found. Nazari had traveled over six miles through steep and densely wooded terrain before being located by the rescue team.

After reuniting with his hiking friends, Nazari was flown to a hospital for a medical assessment. Despite his ordeal, he appeared to be in good health and high spirits. The mild weather conditions during the Southern Hemisphere summer likely contributed to his survival.

Search teams had been optimistic about finding Nazari alive, given his experience as a hiker and the items found along his path, including a campfire, camera, and hiking poles. Fortunately, he only required treatment for dehydration upon being rescued. Ambulance Insp. Adam Mower commended Nazari for his remarkable condition after being missing for such an extended period.

The successful rescue mission was a collaborative effort involving over 300 people searching the national park, which is home to the towering Mount Kosciuszko. Nazari’s story serves as a reminder of the importance of proper preparation and resilience when venturing into the wilderness.
