Nova Scotia’s Police Watchdog Investigating Death of 25-Year-Old Man in Halifax Police Custody

Halifax Regional Police are under investigation by Nova Scotia’s police watchdog after a 25-year-old man died while in their custody on Saturday night. The tragic incident took place at a condo building on Vimy Avenue in Fairview around 7:45 p.m. AT.

According to a news release issued by Halifax police on Sunday, the man was reportedly experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident. The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT), the province’s police watchdog, stated in their own news release that a struggle ensued between the man and the police, resulting in the man being Tasered.

The police news release mentioned that the man had become aggressive towards the officers before being Tasered. Following the altercation, the man was taken into custody by Halifax police. However, his health deteriorated, prompting the officers to provide first aid. Despite efforts from paramedics and firefighters to revive him, the man was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.

Halifax police have directed all inquiries regarding the incident to SIRT for further investigation. In response to queries, a spokesperson for SIRT confirmed that the man had passed away at the Vimy Avenue address but was unavailable for an interview at the time.

As the investigation continues, the community awaits further updates on the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of the young man in Halifax police custody.
