2nd suspect arrested in a knife attack in Germany that wounded an American man

Second Suspect Arrested in Connection with Knife Attack on American in Dresden

BERLIN (AP) — Authorities in Germany have announced the arrest of a second suspect in connection with a knife attack on a tram in Dresden last weekend, during which an American man was wounded.

The 20-year-old Syrian suspect turned himself in to police just hours after a wanted notice was issued for him. He was apprehended in a suburban Dresden square after contacting the police emergency number and providing his location, according to a statement from police and prosecutors.

The victim, a 20-year-old American, was assaulted in the early hours of Sunday while the tram was stopped. Reports indicate that he intervened when two men were harassing a woman on board the tram and was then attacked himself before the assailants fled, leaving him with facial injuries.

The U.S. Embassy in Berlin condemned the “brutal attack” in a social media post, calling on German authorities to swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice and impose the maximum legal penalties.

The first suspect, a 21-year-old Syrian, was initially detained on Sunday but released due to insufficient grounds to hold him in custody. However, he was re-arrested on Tuesday after new evidence implicated him in the attack.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing as authorities work to ensure that all those responsible for the violent assault are held accountable for their actions.
