Three children have tragically lost their lives in an overnight crash on Highway 401 in Etobicoke, a devastating incident that police suspect is related to impaired driving.
The collision occurred at approximately 12:33 a.m. near Renforth Drive and Highway 401 on the eastbound off-ramp, according to a statement released by Toronto police on Sunday morning.
Reports indicate that a vehicle collided with a stationary vehicle that was carrying six individuals. It is yet to be confirmed whether the second vehicle was parked legally on the road shoulder or not. CBC has reached out to the authorities for further clarification, but no response has been provided at this time.
Tragically, two children were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, while a third child succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
In addition to the three fatalities, a fourth child and two adults were transported to the hospital with serious injuries. Fortunately, their conditions are reported as stable by Toronto paramedics.
A 19-year-old male, who was the sole occupant of the offending vehicle, has been apprehended and is facing charges of impaired driving in connection to the incident.
Details regarding the identity of the victims and whether they were all from the same family are not currently available. The ages of the individuals involved have also not been disclosed by paramedics.
