30,000 chickens dead after break-in at Kings County barn

Upwards of 30,000 chicken died after someone broke into their barn late last month in Kings County.

Const. Dominic Laflamme said police are investigating the incident on Lakewood Road in Steam Mill as a case of mischief and break and enter

Police were called to the property at noon on Nov. 22 after the owner discovered the break-in and damage that led to the deaths of the birds. The loss was estimated at $160,000.

Police believe the break and enter happened between Nov. 21 at 8:30 p.m. and Nov. 22 at 11 a.m.

“It’s a big loss,” Laflamme said. He didn’t know if the dead chickens were the entire flock or just part of it.

The chickens were worth about $5.50 each.

Laflamme said he couldn’t say what exactly the mischief was because that is part of the investigation.

“It’s not information I’m at liberty to divulge as per the district commander in Kings,” he said. Investigators want to keep some information held back for now.

“They’re looking to generate some more tips from the public to get some information,” Laflamme said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact RCMP in Kings County or Crime Stoppers.
