The Body of a 72-Year-Old Nova Scotian Found on Shore of Maine Town After Sailboat Accident

The body of a 72-year-old man from Nova Scotia was discovered on the shore of a Maine town after the sailboat he was on ran aground. According to a news release from the state’s Department of Marine Resources, the man was sailing with a couple from New Hampshire.

The couple contacted 911 around 3 a.m. ET on Monday to report that they were stranded at the southern end of Isle au Haut after their 12-metre sailboat began to break apart on the rocks. Isle au Haut is a sparsely populated island located southwest of Bar Harbor, Maine.

Following the boat’s disintegration, all three individuals were in the water for over an hour. Luckily, they were all wearing life jackets. The couple managed to pull the Nova Scotia man to shore before Maine Marine Patrol arrived to take possession of his body at around 5 a.m.

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an examination of the man’s body at a funeral home in Ellsworth, Maine. The two survivors were transported to Stonington, Maine, where they were evaluated and subsequently released by medical personnel.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety precautions while out at sea. Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.
