Man arrested on Highway 102 after attempting to flee from police

38-Year-Old Nova Scotia Man Arrested on Highway 102
A 38-year-old Nova Scotia man, Stephen Joseph (Dakota) Maloney, was taken into custody by the RCMP on Highway 102 near Shubenacadie on Thursday. Maloney, who was wanted for multiple offences including charges related to intimate partner violence, is being held in jail until next week.
According to a release by the RCMP, Maloney was driving erratically in the wrong direction on the divided highway before his arrest. Police attempted to stop his car by deploying a spike belt on a side road, but Maloney continued driving. A provincial government helicopter was used to track the vehicle and assist police in pursuing it onto the main highway. With the help of an RCMP emergency response team and police dogs, Maloney was eventually apprehended.
Maloney is facing charges such as flight from a peace officer, forcible confinement, and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. There was a passenger in the vehicle during the traffic stop, who was determined to be a victim and subsequently released by police. Maloney sustained minor injuries and received treatment at the hospital.
In addition to the recent charges, Maloney is also scheduled to be sentenced for previous convictions that include mischief, dangerous operation of a vehicle, theft, assault, and driving while disqualified.
The RCMP acknowledged that the arrest, which led to the temporary closure of the highway in both directions, may have been unsettling for those who came across the scene.
