Artists pay tribute to rocker Joel Plaskett on surprise covers album

Joel Plaskett, a Canadian music icon, was recently surprised with a tribute album titled “Songs from the Gang – A Celebration of Joel Plaskett.” The album, featuring covers from 22 artists such as Sloan, the Sheepdogs, the Arkells, and more, was kept a secret from Plaskett until it was revealed to him at Ditch Records and CDs in Victoria. Plaskett was overwhelmed with emotion upon hearing the album for the first time, expressing gratitude to all involved in the project.

The tribute album, released as an early birthday present for Plaskett, showcases his extensive career spanning over three decades. Starting with his band Thrush Hermit in the 1990s, Plaskett has since established himself as a solo artist, releasing 17 albums both independently and with his band, the Joel Plaskett Emergency. Known for his warm personality and musical talent, Plaskett has also ventured into producing records at his studio, Fang Recording, in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.

Each artist featured on the album brings their unique interpretation to Plaskett’s songs, adding a personal touch to his classic tunes. From Alan Syliboy’s Mi’kmaw-inspired rendition of “Nowhere With You” to Sloan’s grunge-inspired cover of “Love This Town,” the album pays homage to Plaskett’s musical legacy. Chris Murphy of Sloan, a longtime friend of Plaskett, reminisced about their late-night conversations in Halifax, reflecting on their shared love for music and life.

Plaskett expressed his gratitude towards Sloan for their support early in his career, noting the significance of their friendship and musical connection. The tribute album holds a special place in Plaskett’s heart, serving as an incredible birthday gift and a testament to the enduring impact of his music.
