The Catholic Church welcomed a new pontiff on May 8, 2025, as Archbishop Robert Francis Prevost was announced as Pope Leo XIV. The 67-year-old native of Dolton, Illinois, ascended to the highest office in the Church following the death of Pope Francis earlier in the year.

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Archbishop Prevost, has a long and distinguished career in the Church. He was ordained as a priest in 1978 and served in various parishes in the United States before moving to Peru in 1988. In Peru, he worked as the parish administrator at Our Lady of Monserrat Parish in Trujillo from 1992 to 1999.

In 2000, Archbishop Prevost was appointed as the Archbishop of Lima, where he served until 2018. During his time in Lima, he focused on social justice issues and worked to improve the lives of the poor and marginalized in the city. In 2023, he was elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope Francis.

As Pope Leo XIV, he brings a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to serving the Church and its followers. In his first public appearance as pontiff, he addressed the crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square, emphasizing the importance of unity and compassion within the Church.

“I am humbled and honored to be chosen as the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church,” Pope Leo XIV said. “I ask for your prayers and support as we work together to spread the message of love and peace to all corners of the world.”

Pope Leo XIV’s election comes at a critical time for the Catholic Church, as it faces numerous challenges and controversies. However, his reputation as a compassionate and dedicated leader gives hope to many that he will be able to guide the Church through these turbulent times.

In the days following his election, Pope Leo XIV met with the College of Cardinals and led the Pro Ecclesia Mass in the Sistine Chapel. He also delivered the Regina Caeli prayer from the main central loggia balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, reaffirming his commitment to the Church and its mission.

As Pope Leo XIV settles into his new role, the faithful around the world look to him for guidance and inspiration. With his experience, humility, and dedication to serving others, he is poised to lead the Church with wisdom and compassion for years to come.
