Grand jury indicts Phoenix Ikner in Florida State University mass shooting

A 20-year-old man accused of killing two individuals and injuring six others in a mass shooting on Florida State University’s campus has been indicted by a grand jury. Phoenix Ikner faces two counts of first-degree murder charges and seven counts of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, as reported by WTXL ABC 27. The grand jury described the shooting as “our community’s worst nightmare,” highlighting the gravity of the tragic event.
The indictment revealed further details about the mass shooting, including the heroic actions of FSU police officer Cody Poppell. Poppell reportedly drove directly towards the danger on his motorcycle, confronting Ikner amid the chaos and firing shots at him, one of which struck him in the face. Ikner is said to have used a shotgun and a .45 caliber pistol stolen from his parents’ home to carry out the attack on the college campus.
The victims of the shooting, Robert Morales and Tiru Chabba, were identified in the indictment. Chabba’s family released a statement through their attorney expressing their hope for closure through the thorough investigation and prosecution of the tragic events. Ikner, who had been hospitalized with a jaw injury following the shooting, had his first court appearance online after his release, where he was appointed a public defender and held without bond at the Wakulla County Detention Facility.
Tallahassee Chief of Police Lawrence Revell emphasized the commitment to justice, transparency, and community safety in a statement released prior to Ikner’s court appearance. The efforts of law enforcement personnel, medical staff, and partner agencies were acknowledged for their role in bringing the case to this point.
