US Election 2024

Rep. Al Green files articles of impeachment against Trump over alleged ‘authoritarianism’

Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, has once again taken a stand against President Donald Trump, calling for his impeachment and accusing him of devolving American democracy into authoritarianism. In a letter to his colleagues in the House, Green expressed his deep concerns about the state of democracy under Trump’s leadership.

Green argues that impeachment is necessary, even in the absence of a constitutional crisis. He filed H. Res. 415, titled “Impeaching Donald John Trump, President of the United States, of high crimes and misdemeanors,” outlining the president’s alleged authoritarian rule, violations of due process, denigration of federal judges, and defiance of court orders, including those from the Supreme Court.

The congressman also accused Trump of condoning “untruthful statements” against the Court’s opinion on the deportation of accused MS-13 member Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Green emphasized that an authoritarian leader does not have to commit a statutory offense to warrant impeachment, citing Article II, Section 4 of the United States Constitution as grounds for holding Trump accountable.

Despite facing backlash from party leadership, Green remains steadfast in his pursuit of impeachment. He is the second member of Congress to introduce articles of impeachment against Trump in his second term, with Rep. Shri Thanedar, D-Mich., also previously calling for impeachment before withdrawing the bill. Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., who initially supported the measure, reportedly criticized it as “idiotic.”

In his letter, Green asserted his willingness to stand alone in his opposition to Trump, emphasizing that impeachment is a matter of conscience. He has a history of vocal opposition to the president, having been removed from Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress in March 2025 for heckling the president. Despite facing censure for the protest, Green remains resolute in his convictions.

As the debate over Trump’s impeachment continues, Green’s unwavering stance serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding democratic values and holding elected officials accountable. His actions highlight the role of individual conscience in shaping political decisions, even in the face of adversity.
