Proposed $21M settlement reached with victims of Ottawa doctor Vincent Nadon

Ottawa Doctor Convicted of Sexual Assault and Voyeurism Faces Settlement with Victims

A former Ottawa doctor, Vincent Nadon, who was convicted of sexual assault and voyeurism against his patients at a University of Ottawa health clinic, may soon face a proposed $21 million settlement with the school. The settlement would be disbursed among the members of the class-action lawsuit, including any patient of the University of Ottawa Health Services who was recorded without their consent or sexually assaulted by Nadon.

The proposed settlement, which has been obtained by CBC News, outlines that a team of trauma-informed, experienced psychologists will classify members into four categories based on the severity of abuse experienced. Additionally, an estimated $1 million will be allocated for victims who suffered past or future income loss or lost educational opportunities.

Lead lawyer Sean Brown, representing the plaintiffs, described the journey to seek justice for the more than 140 known victims as long and difficult. Brown expressed confidence that additional survivors may come forward in the days ahead and commended the dedication and perseverance shown by the legal team in securing a just outcome.

While the university and its clinic admit no wrongdoing, court documents reveal the proposed settlement as a step towards providing compensation and closure for the victims of Nadon’s actions.

Hearing Scheduled for September

Nadon, who was arrested in January 2018 for secretly recording dozens of his patients over nearly 30 years, practiced medicine at the university’s family health clinic on Rideau Street during the assaults. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario revoked Nadon’s medical license in 2020, following his guilty plea to 14 sexual assault and voyeurism charges.

Despite being sentenced to eight years in prison, with one year deducted for time served, Nadon was granted full parole in 2021. A hearing to determine the approval of the proposed settlement is set for September 8 in Ottawa’s Ontario Superior Court of Justice.
