DC couple targeted following dozens of attacks on Israeli embassies since 1969

The recent attack on the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C. that resulted in the tragic deaths of two employees, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, is just one in a long history of assaults against Israeli targets around the world. The couple, who were soon-to-be-engaged, were senselessly murdered outside the Capital Jewish Museum by a suspected shooter who shouted, “Free, free Palestine!” before being apprehended by security officers.

This attack comes at a time of heightened tensions over Israel’s operations in the Gaza Strip, with humanitarian concerns escalating by the day. However, this is not the first time the Israeli embassy in D.C. has been targeted. Since the deadly attack on Israel in October 2023, there have been at least 31 terror attacks on Israeli embassies and diplomatic staff worldwide.

Some of the most notable incidents include the 2012 attack in Delhi, India, where a diplomatic vehicle was bombed, and the 1992 bombing in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which killed 29 people, including nine Israeli embassy employees. These attacks serve as a grim reminder of the ongoing threats faced by Israeli diplomats around the world.

In February 2024, an active-duty member of the U.S. Air Force set himself on fire outside the Israeli embassy in an apparent act of protest, resulting in his death but no injuries to embassy staff. In July 2004, dual suicide bombings outside the Israeli and American embassies in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, claimed the lives of the Israeli ambassador’s personal bodyguard and four local policemen.

The attack in Washington, D.C. is just the latest in a long line of violent incidents targeting Israeli embassies and personnel. As the investigation into this tragic event continues, it serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threats faced by Israeli diplomats and the need for heightened security measures to protect them.
