Israel’s new ‘Barak Magen’ aerial defense system intercepts Iranian drones

Israel activated a new aerial defense system – named “Barak Magen,” which translates to “lightning shield” – for the first time on Sunday night. The system successfully intercepted and destroyed multiple Iranian drones, showcasing its effectiveness in protecting Israeli airspace.
The Israeli Navy utilized the “Barak Magen” along with its long-range air defense (LRAD) interceptor to intercept eight Iranian drones. These drones were launched from an Israeli navy Sa’ar 6 missile ship, demonstrating the versatility and capability of the new defense system.
John Hannah, a senior fellow at the National Security of America, highlighted the significance of the Barak Magen system in enhancing Israel’s air and missile defense capabilities. He emphasized that the system adds another layer to Israel’s already sophisticated defense architecture, making it one of the most advanced in the world.
The IDF confirmed that the Barak Magen system can intercept a wide range of threats, including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles, high-trajectory threats, and shore-to-sea missiles. This comprehensive defense system not only protects the Israeli fleet but also safeguards critical infrastructure and population centers along Israel’s coastline.
Hannah further explained that the Barak Magen provides long-distance protection to Israel’s expanding oil and gas infrastructure in the eastern Mediterranean. It allows Israel to conduct interceptions at significant distances from its homeland, adding strategic depth to its defense capabilities.
Since the conflict with Iran escalated, the Israeli Navy’s missile ship flotilla has intercepted approximately 25 UAVs that posed a threat to Israel. This further underscores the importance of the Barak Magen system in effectively countering aerial threats.
In response to ongoing missile strikes between Israel and Iran, the Israeli military claimed air superiority over Tehran. They issued warnings for 330,000 people in a central part of the Iranian capital to evacuate ahead of new strikes, showcasing the escalating tensions between the two nations.
The successful deployment of the Barak Magen system highlights Israel’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and protecting its sovereignty. With ongoing threats in the region, the implementation of advanced defense systems like Barak Magen is crucial in maintaining security and stability in the Middle East.
