DHS defends officers’ actions in viral Santa Ana landscaper arrest video

A video has recently gone viral, capturing a landscaper in Santa Ana, Narciso Barranco, appearing to panic and swing a weed whacker before being tackled by Border Patrol officers. The incident took place outside an IHOP on Edinger and Ritchey in Santa Ana, CA, sparking outrage and raising questions about the alleged use of force by the immigration enforcement officers. Barranco, who is undocumented, was reportedly detained while on the job.

The video shows agents tackling and striking Barranco, a husband and father of three sons who are United States Marines. The footage has caused controversy, with conflicting accounts of whether Barranco was trying to mow down officers or simply attempting to flee. Santa Ana Mayor Valerie Amezcua expressed her dismay at the situation, calling the arrest unprofessional and unjust.

The Department of Homeland Security has defended the actions of the agents, accusing the media of misrepresenting the incident. According to DHS, Barranco allegedly attempted to run away from law enforcement and swung the weed whacker directly at a border patrol agent’s face. They claim the agents used minimum force necessary to resolve the situation safely.

However, Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a senior fellow at the Immigration Council, disagreed with DHS’s interpretation of the events. He argued that Barranco was merely waving the weed whacker in self-defense as he ran away from unidentified individuals. A GoFundMe campaign set up for Barranco’s family described the handling of the situation as “disgusting and heart-wrenching.”

The fundraiser highlighted Barranco’s character as a hardworking man who has raised his family in the United States. It also revealed that Barranco had gone over 24 hours without medical attention and was still wearing his bloody clothes from the detention. Additionally, the campaign claimed that Barranco was being held in a cell with 70 people and only received water once a day.
