Paralyzed man speaks and sings with AI brain-computer interface

A groundbreaking new brain-computer interface (BCI) system developed by researchers at the University of California, Davis is changing the game for individuals who have lost the ability to speak due to neurological conditions like ALS. This innovative technology is revolutionizing the way people communicate, allowing them to engage in real-time, natural conversations through the power of their thoughts.

The system utilizes four microelectrode arrays implanted in the brain’s speech production region to capture neural activity associated with speech. These signals are then processed by an AI decoding model, converting them into audible speech in just ten milliseconds. What sets this system apart is its ability to recreate the user’s own voice using a voice cloning algorithm trained on pre-ALS recordings, resulting in a more personalized and expressive conversation experience.

Participants in the study were able to communicate with nearly 60 percent comprehension using the BCI system, a significant improvement compared to previous technologies. The system also demonstrated flexibility in handling new, made-up words, showcasing its adaptability and potential for widespread use.

While the system is still in its early stages and requires further testing with additional participants, the initial results are promising. The BrainGate2 clinical trial at UC Davis Health continues to enroll participants to refine and expand the system’s capabilities.
