Quebec-based airline ending flights between Halifax and Sydney airports

A Quebec-based airline that began offering flights between Halifax and Sydney last fall has announced that it will be discontinuing this route. Pascan Aviation, which launched the service in October, stated in a news release that the flights will come to an end on July 20.

The decision to end the Halifax-Sydney route was made due to lower than expected passenger volumes, despite the efforts of the airline’s team and the support from airport staff and local partners. Pascan Aviation, headquartered in Saint-Hubert, Quebec, expressed gratitude to the community, the McCurdy Sydney Airport team, and passengers who had purchased tickets. The airline also assured customers that anyone with bookings after July 20 will receive a full refund.

When Pascan Aviation first introduced the Halifax-Sydney route, it was met with enthusiasm from politicians, business owners, and tourism officials. The service was particularly welcomed as it had been nearly two years since a carrier had offered flights between the two cities.

Myles Tuttle, CEO of the Sydney airport authority, expressed disappointment over Pascan’s decision to discontinue the route. However, he acknowledged that the demand necessary to sustain the service was not met. Currently, Air Canada operates daily direct flights from McCurdy Sydney Airport to Toronto and Montreal, while WestJet offers flights twice a week from Sydney to Calgary.

Tuttle extended gratitude to Pascan for their efforts and highlighted the growth in passenger traffic on other flights. He noted that there has been a consistent increase in travel from Sydney year after year, indicating a strong demand for air travel within the community.

Despite the end of Pascan Aviation’s Halifax-Sydney route, the McCurdy Sydney Airport remains committed to working with airlines to enhance service in the region. The airport continues to focus on improving connectivity and providing convenient travel options for passengers.
