Trump orders review of Smithsonian museums after calling them ‘woke’

President Donald Trump has taken aim at the Smithsonian Institution, ordering a comprehensive review of the nation’s top museums in an effort to combat what he sees as a pervasive “WOKE” culture. In a scathing post on Truth Social, Trump accused the Smithsonian and other museums of promoting narratives that denigrate the United States rather than celebrate its achievements.

The White House formalized this directive in a letter to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch, calling for a review of exhibition plans, internal guidelines, and America 250 programming materials. The goal, according to the letter, is to ensure that the museums reflect the unity, progress, and enduring values that define the American story.

Specifically, the review will focus on public-facing content, curatorial processes, exhibition planning, collection use, and overall narrative standards. The targeted museums include the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and others under the Smithsonian umbrella.

This move follows earlier criticism of specific Smithsonian exhibitions, with the White House questioning the accuracy and balance of certain displays. The administration has called for a more accurate, balanced, and consistent presentation of history that aligns with American values.

Despite the strong language in the letter, the White House insists that the review process is meant to be constructive and collaborative. Officials aim to replace divisive or ideologically driven language with historically accurate and inclusive descriptions that highlight America’s heritage.

The timeline for the review requires museums to submit materials within 30 days, conduct staff interviews within 75 days, and begin implementing content corrections within 120 days. The ultimate goal is to renew the Smithsonian’s role as a leading museum institution that celebrates the people, principles, and progress of the American story.
