Alberta to cover Covid vaccines for health workers

The government of Alberta announced a new policy on Tuesday regarding COVID-19 vaccinations for health workers. In a partial reversal, the government stated that it will now cover the costs of COVID-19 vaccinations for all health workers in the province.
Maddison McKee, spokesperson for the Minister of Health Services Adriana Lagrange, confirmed that COVID-19 vaccination will be expanded to all health workers this fall as part of the province’s vaccination plan. McKee emphasized that immunization will remain voluntary for all health workers.
This decision comes after criticism from public health experts and trade unions for healthcare workers, who argued that it was irresponsible to require health workers to pay for their own protection in the workplace.
Mike Parker, president of the Health Sciences Association of Alberta, expressed relief at the government’s new policy. He stated that the trade union had raised concerns during collective negotiations about the need for vaccine coverage for its members, and is pleased to see that it has now been addressed.
David Harrigan, Director of Employment Relations with the United Nurses of Alberta, also welcomed the policy change, calling it “an incredible relief” for healthcare workers. He emphasized the importance of removing barriers to vaccination, especially for those who work with vulnerable patients.
The government’s new vaccine policy aims to prevent waste and reduce costs, as approximately $135 million has been spent on unused doses. The policy will cover the costs of COVID-19 vaccinations for health workers, as well as for individuals with compromised immune systems, those on social programs, and seniors in congregated settings.
The details of the policy, including eligibility criteria, vaccination schedules, and administrative reimbursements for COVID-19 vaccines, are still being finalized by the Lagrange office. The government has also opened online pre-orders for COVID-19 and flu shots, with appointments starting in October.
Opposition leader Naheed Nenshi has called on the government to provide free vaccinations for all seniors in the province. The federal government has delegated the responsibility of purchasing COVID-19 vaccines to the provinces, but Alberta’s approach remains unique in its exclusion of local pharmacies from the distribution process.
Overall, the government’s new policy on COVID-19 vaccinations for health workers is a positive step towards ensuring the safety and well-being of all Albertans.
