Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani recently met with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., and Rep. Yvette Clarke, D-N.Y., in an effort to secure endorsements from key Democratic leaders in New York City. Despite winning the primary in June, Mamdani has yet to receive endorsements from prominent figures like Gov. Kathy Hochul and Senate Minority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer.
The meeting, which took place at a church in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, focused on issues such as affordability and the exodus of Black New Yorkers from the city. Mamdani shared his plans to address these challenges and ensure that all New Yorkers can afford to live in the city with dignity.

Rep. Clarke expressed concerns about Mamdani’s past remarks, particularly his initial refusal to condemn the phrase “globalize the intifada.” She emphasized the importance of addressing these issues to maintain credibility with her constituents, especially in her district, which has a large Jewish community.
Despite the meeting with Mamdani, both Jeffries and Clarke have yet to endorse his candidacy. Mamdani’s campaign has received support from other Democratic leaders like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Nydia Velázquez, as well as Sen. Bernie Sanders.
Continued Engagement

Jeffries and Clarke have emphasized the importance of ongoing conversations with Mamdani about the future of New York City. While they have not officially endorsed him, they have acknowledged the need to address pressing issues facing the city. Mamdani’s campaign continues to engage with Democratic leaders in hopes of securing their support.
As the November election approaches, Mamdani’s efforts to gain endorsements from key Democratic figures will be crucial in solidifying his position as the Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City.
